How it works

Why branching matters for thesis research
A thesis requires you to hold multiple dimensions in mind at once: what’s been studied, what methods were used, what was found, and what’s still unknown. Linear note-taking collapses these dimensions into a single stream, making it hard to see the full picture. A branching map preserves the dimensionality. You can see all the methodological options at one level and all the literature themes at another.
The branching structure also helps during advisor meetings. Instead of flipping through pages of notes, you can walk your advisor through the visual map — showing which directions you explored, why you chose one over another, and where your contribution fits. This is particularly useful when your research spans multiple disciplines. Example
Imagine you’re starting a master’s thesis on urban food deserts. You enter the broad topic and branch into geographic analysis, health outcomes, policy interventions, and community-based solutions. Under policy interventions, you fork into supply-side approaches (grocery store incentives) and demand-side approaches (SNAP benefit supplements). You discover that most research covers supply-side interventions, but demand-side studies are newer and less conclusive — that’s a potential gap. You can then deep dive into each gap to stress-test whether it’s a real research opportunity or already covered.
